I recently completed redid our primary bathroom on a budget without any demo. A major facelift you could say! My inspiration for the bathroom was Traditional, Victorian, with a touch of modern. I wanted to complete this project for under 1,500 CAD – and came under budget!!

Cost Breakdown

  • Paint and supplies – ~$260.00
  • Box trim moulding $389.00 (with about 80ft left over!!)
  • faucet – $90.39
  • new vanity light – $146.09
  • ikea Hemnes Vanity makeover – ~$40
  • IKEA Billy bookcase + makeover – ~$150.00
  • Decor ~ including window film ~ 420.00

TOTAL: ~ $1495.48 CAD

I knew I wanted to add box trim moulding but sourcing the right box trim was a challenge to say the least. I wanted chunky trim but with a reasonable price point. I knew I needed about 300 ft of box trim as I was planning to do three boxes high from baseboard to crown moulding. See my blog on box trim moulding install for step by step on how I achieved this. I ended up buying about 400 feet to allow room for error and wastage and also there was a deal that allowed for a higher discount at this amount at the time.

I knew I wanted a warm sage green paint but nothing was right for this space and I purchased SO many samples! Our room is West facing for reference. I ended up mixing different paints I liked together and created the magical green that is in my bathroom.

I have attached the formula here for your convenience. If you end up using this green I would love to see it in your space!

I also knew I wanted to give colour drenching a try so I started by completely painting everything. I’m not going to sugar coat it this part was not so fun by the end. I painted the walls, trim, ceiling, door.

I used a Aura Bath and spa in matte by Benjamin Moore for the walls and a Satin in Regal for all the trimwork.

Once my room was good and colour drenched it was time for the box trim moulding. This was a learning curve but is definitely something anyone can take on with some research and the right tools.

I decided I wanted a different bathroom vanity. We have the IKEA Hemnes standard bathroom vanity in brown-black that was here when we bought the house. I decided to give it some character and charm and completely update it. You can find the full transformation on my blog here. This project was one of the most cost effective transformations I have done to date! it really packed a punch for a reasonable price.

I also changed out the faucet and added a brass faucet with antique vibes. In addition I paired it with a similar styled vintage vanity light.

We also needed more storage as we don’t have a linen closet and our house is old and storage didn’t seem to be a priority back then! SO – I decided to use a used IKEA Billy Bookcase (I bought off of fb Marketplace) and transform it to a gorgeous arched linen closet in our bathroom.

The Final touches included some decor. I saved on cost here by thrifting, using things I already had on hand, and printing out photos on the wall myself. Otherwise this could have ate up a big portion of the budget!

For those who have yes we did used to have a stand alone tub in this bathroom. We decided to sell it to create more space. It wasn’t an antique tub and I had used it maybe three times since we had moved in so it wasn’t a difficult decision. We couldn’t be happier with the result! Let me know what you think!
